The Effervescence of Evangeline Lilly Evangeline Lilly, star of the hit TV series 'Lost,' returns home to Canada with not one but two films at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival. By Karl Rozemeyer
Evangeline Lilly's starring role in the addictive TV drama Lost has brought many opportunities to her door, but since the series began in 2004, the former model has remained choosy when it comes to movie scripts. However, this year the native Canadian returned to the Great White North for the Toronto International Film Festival with not one but two films.
The first film is The Hurt Locker, a violent drama about a bomb squad in Iraq directed by Kathryn Bigelow that was snapped up by Summit Entertainment during the fest. Lilly took the cameo part because of her instant rapport with the famous director. Lilly is taking on her first starring role in the indie thriller Afterwards, which also premiered at TIFF. Adapted for the screen by director Gilles Bourdos and Michel Spinosa from the novel by Guillaume Musso, Afterwards is the story of a couple, Nathan and Claire, who lost one of their children to sudden death syndrome. Claire (Lilly) lives alone with their remaining child and is estranged from Nathan (played by French breakout actor Romain Duris, star of The Beat That Skipped My Heart and Dans Paris), who's a high-powered lawyer in New York City. Things take a turn for the strange when he meets Dr. Kay (John Malkovich), a mysterious man who claims he is a "messenger" who can predict when people are going to die. According to Dr. Kay, Nathan's life was spared as a child because he still has much unfinished work to do.Read More ...
News, Articles, Projects - Dark plot of "Afterwards" took Evi to a dark place posted on 17 Sep 2008 by carolilly - comments:

Evangeline Lilly was so disturbed playing a mother forced to confront the loss of a child in her new movie that there were often days she simply could not work.
"A couple of days I went on set and said, 'I just can't do it today,'" says Lilly. "I went in to that dark place so deeply that I was spent."
In "Afterwards," Romain Duris plays a New York lawyer who is neglecting his wife, played by Lilly, and their daughter. When Duris encounters a strange doctor, played by John Malkovich, who claims he can sense when someone is about to die, the family begins to unravel.
Directed by Gilles Bourdos, "Afterwards" is the first major film role for Lilly, best known for playing Kate Austen on "Lost."
Although Lilly does not have children of her own, she says she used her relationship with her nephews as inspiration for her character. Having to imagine the loss of a loved one obviously took its toll.
Sometimes, says Lilly, she would arrive on set and have to make it known that "I have nothing left to pull out," she says, referring to the emotional drain of the role.
However, that sort of dedication, she says, is an inherent part of the job.
"That's one of the things about acting," says Lilly. "You give so much."

TORONTO - Evangeline Lilly has become a bona fide TV star playing a feisty castaway on "Lost" and has been at the Toronto International Film Festival this week talking up her starring role in the brooding new movie "Afterwards."
The glamorous parts are a far cry from the actress's most-hated career turn: a one-month stint as a flight attendant for now-defunct Royal Airlines.
"(It) was probably my least favourite job ever, and I've done some pretty awful jobs," recalled Lilly.
"I remember the first time we had to do (the demonstration) where you point to the exit signs and do the gas mask thing. ... I got the gas mask caught in my hair. So they continued on with the announcement and I (was) trying to untangle my hair."
Despite the unpleasant memories, the gig had an upside. It gave Lilly a chance to practise her French, a skill that came in handy during "Afterwards," which was directed by Gilles Bourdos and shot last summer in Montreal.
The actress, who was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., says she considers herself "half French" and jumped at the opportunity to do a film with a French crew, a French director and French co-star.
"Afterwards" tells the story of uptight lawyer Nathan (French star Romain Duris) who is confronted by a mysterious doctor (John Malkovich) claiming he knows when certain people are going to die. Lilly plays Nathan's ex-wife Claire. The story is a rumination on the fragility of life, a theme that appealed to Lilly.
"I'm always looking for a script that I can stand behind and get excited about," she said.
"Call me a bleeding heart Canadian, but I feel like if I'm not doing art that sends a very strong message, then what's the point of doing art? So many Hollywood films are just about entertainment, they're not about sending a message, they're not about telling the audience something about life."Read More ...
